I would like to thank my wife, Kim Heathco, a Korean national and now a US citizen. This book is a fictional account based on some real-life events and others that could never have happened and are purely fabricated. I wrote this book on the basis of that experience and the many missions I carried out while serving in South Korea. I had 385 patrols inside the DMZ and was the patrol leader on most. We never knew if the alarms were sounding battle or not, but, regardless, we rolled to the DMZ. I pulled a lot of DMZ missions and alerts. I served in South Korea from 1978 to 1991 as a soldier in the Second Division. We were fully loaded for combat when we rolled on alerts and headed north into the teeth of the North Korean war machine, willing to sacrifice our very lives to defend Korea, Land of the Morning Calm. We knew we were expendable, but we wouldn’t go down without a fight. I was a member of the Second Division, and I could see that most people in the United States didn’t know what we endured to secure the freedoms of the South Koreans. These men and women put their lives on the line every time the sirens went off. This is also for the vets who pulled the demilitarized zone (DMZ) mission and acted as speed bumps the North Koreans had to cross to get to Seoul. M y inspiration for this book was the men and women who were stationed in South Korea assigned to the Second Division, a division that saw more hostilities than any other in the world in 1985. Keep the faith, brothers, lest we be forgotten. Willingly, we gave our all, and still we get no recognition for what we achieved: a safe and prosperous South Korea. The Second Division was an elite fighting machine with a sprit bound together in blood and sweat, each soldier helping each other to accomplish our mission in the days that we served. We pulled our duties with the utmost excellence. We were always combat-ready and willing to sacrifice our lives on freedom’s frontier. T his book is dedicated to the men and women who served in the Land of the Morning Calm, the Republic of South Korea and in the demilitarized zone (DMZ), who performed their mission requirements and executed those missions with the highest state of readiness for the protection and defense of South Korea.
